Motivation Reduces Worker Turnover by 53%
A recent study on employee motivation and performance in the
fast food and hotel industries by the SITE Foundation found that a higher
concentration on motivation results in a reduction of worker turnover by 53 percent.
"Motivation in the Hospitality Industry" measured key indices of motivated |
|
 |
behavior identified in the widely recognized
CANE (Commitment And Necessary Effort)
Model of Motivation: Choice, persistence
and effort.
"It is incumbent upon decision makers and
managers to understand human motivation
to ensure motivation-based performance
deficits are identified, diagnosed and cured
in reasonable fashion to promote employee
retention and, in turn, business success,"
says Frank Katusak, of the SITE
Foundation.
Employee turnover was a key variable in
"Motivation in the Hospitality Industry".
Furthermore, unwanted employee turnover
costs the U.S. $140 billion annually.
Considering the amount of money, time,
effort and other resources businesses invest
in employee hiring and training, companies
need to pay closer attention to the motivational health of their employees. |
|
Key Findings
- A 20% reduction in employee turnover with employees who reported high levels of value for work;
they persisted more and exerted more effort than colleagues who reported low levels of value at work.
- A 17.5% lower turnover rate at work sites where employees felt supported by the organization
than at work sites perceived as less supportive.
- Employees who feel better about their jobs tend to persist more, exert more effort and are less likely to leave, reflected
in an 11.5% lower turnover rate than those less satisfied.
As the first part of a multiphase research study, the results will be used to
create The SITE Foundation Motivation Index, a national indicator of employee
motivation to show the predicted impact of motivation on economic performance in the service sector.
It will also be a turnkey tool for use by any type of organization to predict employee motivation
and its impact on business results. The Index release date is December 2004.

At The Heart of Wellness: Incentive Programs Increase Participation and Deliver ROI
Can employers get back control of rising heath care costs? Its not an easy task when you consider these hard facts:
|
|
|
|
The Challenge: Overcoming the Escalating Health Care Costs
The fact that a small minority of individuals with issues ranging from excess weight
and tobacco use to heart disease are not participating in wellness programs is the very reason why costs are rising for everyone. |
|
The Key: Stopping the Flow through Health Management
Stopping the flow of employees in low- and medium-risk situations to high-risk and active-disease conditions requires one critical point of participation: taking healing risk assessments (HRAs), or individual health surveys. HRAs are used to indentify targeted populations, often years before claims data. Proactive intervention with tailored care management programs can prevent disease, affect lifestyle behavior changes, manage health conditions and initiate self-care.
Getting enrollees to participate in HRAs is the gatekeeper to successful results for any proactive wellness program.
|
|
|
|
Now companies can open these gates and get significantly increased participation to achieve ROI goals through wellness incentives.
The Solution: Increasing Participation through Wellness Incentives
The new emerging trend in HRA participation is providing incentives
to enrolling.
Effective promotion campaigns
that include incentives are showing dramatic increases in participation rates.
30-300% Increase in Participation
